Part Ⅱ
Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)
Directions There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is
followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of
them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should
decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the
Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Passage One
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

Before writing a draft, select a topic that you are familiar with,
such as accomplishments other than academics, or successes/failures
that have altered your lifestyle and outlook. Try to choose a topic
that is interesting to the reader. The college essay is a practice
used to elicit the real you, it is not the forum for penning your
darkest secrets or hidden fears (anything too personal will only
bore the reader). General essays with no topic restrictions are
common ground for such blunders. To avoid them, a great deal of
thought and brainstorming must
go into topic selection. 
The essay should convey to the reader acts, thoughts, and people
that you cherish most, with believable backing using real-life
incidents. Thus, the topic you select must highlight the following
three aspects of your personality
1.Your preferences: what you are for or against.
2.Your values: what matters to you most.
3.Your thought-process: a focused and sincere essay signifies
planning and effort.
Deciding what to write is the most important step of the whole essay
writing process. A common mistake made by applicants is trying to
include all sorts of wild
ideas into the essay, without proper brainstorming and selection of
key points.
Thus, what starts off as an essay on your role model quickly turns
into an in-depth account of your personal likes, strengths, traumas
and all other aspects of
the eating habits of your pet canary! 
While you compose your thoughts, don’t forget the real purpose of
the essay-writing exercise! The essay must divulge a lot about the
personality of the writer,
yet should not put the admissions officer to sleep. Don’t forget to
mention details/facts/points that you consider important in
affecting his decision regarding your admission.
21. The passage is mainly concerned with____. 
A) what a topic of an essay should deliver
B) what the readers are interested in an essay
C) what mistakes a writer usually makes in writing an essay
D) what the real purpose of the essay-writing exercise is
22. According to the passage, what are the correct methods in
selecting a
topic of an essay EXCEPT____? 
A) selecting a familiar topic to you
B) choosing an interesting topic to the readers
C) selecting an exhaustive topic 
D) choosing a topic focusing on some aspects of your personality
23.What does “highlight” mean in the second sentence of the second
paragraph? 
A) The most important part.
B) Put light on.
C) Pay no attention to.
D) Give prominence to. 
24.What is the most important step in ensuring a good topic
selection? 
A) Altering your lifestyle and outlook.
B) Proper brainstorming and selection of key points.
C) Writing your darkest secrets or hidden fears.
D) Brainstorming all the prospective readers.
25.What is probably discussed in the following part of the passage?

A) What an essay is mainly made up of.
B) How to write an essay in an effective way.
C) How to make your essay more attractive.
D) Why the admissions officer will go to sleep.

Passage Two
Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

The Canadian economy contracted in April as it shrank by 0.2 percent
from March
. The April shrinkage was the first monthly decline since the events
of Sept. 11
, 2001, Statistics Canada reported Friday. 
During April, manufacturing output continued to fall, while the
economic impact
from the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome affected
Canada’s hospitality sector. 
The economic contraction - Canada’s first in 18 months - was not
unexpected as it matched the forecasts of most economists. 
Consumer demand, a key factor to economic health, had been rolling
along during
the most recent economic expansion as Canadians snapped up houses
and new vehicles. However that roll came to a stop in April. 
“A number of special domestic and international factors stalled this
demand, which resulted in lower output for residential construction
and the retailing industry,” Statistics Canada said. “There was a
retrenchment in the travel-related industries, as both Canadians and
international tourists stayed home.” 
Statistics Canada said it was impossible to isolate the total impact
of SARS on
the economy. 
“The war in Iraq, a weaker-than-expected US economy, a stronger
Canadian dollar,
fluctuating crude oil prices and other events had inter-related
effects in some
industries,” Statistics Canada said. 
Factoring out the travel sector, economic activity declined by 0.1
percent, just a bit better than the whole picture for April.
Manufacturing output fell by 0.3 per cent - the sector’s second drop
over the last three months. Durable goods manufacturers were
responsible for much of the weakness. 
26. What is the main idea of this passage? 
A) An unexpected economic contraction took place in Canada.
B) The Canadian economy contracted in April.
C) Canada’s manufacturing output continued to fall during April.
D) The reasons of Canada’s economic contraction.

27. What was the Canadian economy like before this March in spite of
the
events of Sept,11,2001? 
A) The Canadian economy was steady.
B) The Canadian economy was affected greatly.
C) The Canadian economy contracted by 0.2 percent.
D) The Canadian economy was weak.
28. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this
passage?

A) The residential construction in Canada develops unsteadily.
B) Most economists foresaw the Canadian economic contraction. 
C) The Canadian economic contraction was beyond expectation.
D) The US economy is much stronger than the Canadian economy.
29. How many factors are mentioned in this passage influencing the
Canadian economic contraction? 
A) Six. B) Seven.
C) Eight. D) Nine.
30. The author’s tone in this passage is ____. 
A) sympathetic B) subjective
C) objective D) critical 

Passage Three
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

The climate of earth has fluctuated quite a bit over the last 4.6
billion years
of our planet’s history and it can be expected that the climate will
continue to
change. One of the most intriguing questions in earth science is
whether the periods of ice ages is over or are we living in an
“interglacial,” or period of time between ice ages? 
The geologic time period we are now living in is known as the
Holocene. This epoch began about 11,000 years ago which was the end
of the last glacial period and
the end of the Pleistocene epoch. The Pleistocene was an epoch of
cool glacial
and warmer interglacial periods which began about 1.8 million years
ago. 
Since the glacial period known as the “Wisconsin” in North America
and “Wrm” in Europe when over 10 million square miles (about 27
million km2) of North America, Asia, and Europe were covered by ice,
almost all of the ice sheets covering
the land and glaciers in the mountains have retreated. Today about
ten percent of the earth’s surface is covered by ice; 96% of this
ice is located in Antarctica and Greenland. Glacial ice is also
present in such diverse places as Alaska, Canada, New Zealand, Asia,
and California. 
As only 11,000 years has passed since the last Ice Age, scientists
can not be certain that we are indeed living in a post-glacial
Holocene epoch instead of an interglacial period of the Pleistocene
and thus due for another ice age in the geologic future. Some
scientists believe that an increase in global temperature, as we are
now experiencing, could be a sign of an impending ice age and could
actually increase the amount of ice on the earth’s surface. 
The cold, dry air above the Arctic and Antarctica carries little
moisture and dr
ops little snow on the regions. An increase in global temperature
could increase
the amount of moisture in the air and increase the amount of
snowfall. After years of more snowfall than melting, the polar
regions could accumulate more ice.
An accumulation of ice would lead to a lowering of the level of the
oceans and t
here would be further, unanticipated changes in the global climate
system as well. Our short history on earth and our shorter record
of the climate keeps us from fully understanding the implications of
global warming. Without a doubt, an increase in the earth’s
temperature will have major consequences for all life on this
planet.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? 
A) Has the Pleistocene Epoch Ended?
B) Another Ice Age in the Geologic Future Is Coming?
C) The Ice Ages: Are They Over?
D) Glacial Ice Will Be Present in Different Places?
32. Holocene ____ .
A) ended about 11,000 years ago
B) is an existing geologic time period
C) is the end of the Pleistocene epoch.
D) is an epoch of cool glacial and warmer interglacial periods 
33.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the
passage? 
A) 96 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by ice.
B) Over 10 million square miles of the earth’s surface are covered
by ice now.
C) Almost all of the ice sheets covering the land and glaciers in
the mountains
have been hidden.
D) Most of the ice on the earth’s surface is located in Antarctic
and Greenland
for the time being.
34. What’s the result of an accumulation of ice? 
A) An accumulation of ice would make the global climate system
altered.
B) An accumulation of ice would make snow more difficult to melt.
C) An accumulation of ice would increase the amount of moisture in
the air. 
D) An accumulation of ice would increase the global temperature.
35. What can be inferred from the passage? 
A) The climate of earth has fluctuated quite a bit over the last 4.6
billion years. 
B) An increase in the earth’s temperature will have major
consequences for all l
ife on this planet.
C) The information we have got makes us unable to explain the global
warming com
pletely.
D) The Pleistocene began about 1.8 million years ago.

Passage Four
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

The largest shark known to us, Megalodon, is extinct. Or is it?
Carcharodon Megalodon, commonly known as Megalodon, is believed to
have lived between 1 million and 5 million years ago and thought to
have been 52 feet long. It is (or was) a shark that had a jaw 7 or
more feet wide. Fairly recently, there has been some speculation
about whether it is extinct or just out of reach. Some people
believe that Megalodon has found a home deep in the ocean. There are
many known “Living Fossils”: Coelacanth, Sea Cucumbers, Sea Urchins,
Lobsters, Sea Stars. The common ones like lobsters and sea urchins
are not really looked on as anything amazing. They’ve been around
for thousands of years or more, and are easily accessible
to us. What if they weren’t accessible and yet still existed? We
would label them extinct. The discovery of a live Coelacanth, a fish
long believed extinct, challenged some scientists’ long-held beliefs
on extinction. There have been recent discoveries of incredibly
large squid, and deep-sea fish never before seen by scientists. 
In the 1960’s the US Navy set up underwater microphones around the
world to trac
k Soviet submarines. The network, known as the Sound Surveillance
System, still
lie deep below the ocean’s surface in a layer of water known as the
“deep sound
channel”. The temperature and pressure of the channel allow sound
waves to trave
l undisturbed. NOAA’s Acoustic Monitoring Project has been using the
Sound Surve
illance System to listen for changes in ocean structure like ocean
currents or v
olcanic activity. Most of the sounds recorded are common and of no
concern. One
sound, identified in 1977 by US Navy “spy” sensors, was odd. It was
obviously a
marine animal but the call was more powerful than any of the calls
made by any
other reported sea creature. It was too big for a whale. Could it be
a deep-sea
monster? One possibility was a giant squid, but no one is sure. It
was named “Bl
oop”. Could it be Megalodon? 
If Megalodon is still alive down in the bottom on the ocean, we may
some day soo
n discover it. Then what? Deep sea diving will never be the same,
that’s for sur
e!

Part Ⅳ
Short Answer Questions (15 minutes)
Directions: In this part there is a short passage with five
questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then
answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest
possible words ( not exceeding 10 words ).

Only about two percent of Antarctica peeks through the thick sheets
of ice that
blanket the continent. In the winter, the lowest recorded
temperatures (without
wind chill) have reached -89°C (-129°F). The continent averages 2.4
kilometer
s in height (1.5 miles) above sea level, making it 1.5 kilometers
(almost a mile
) higher than the global average land height! Each year the South
Pole receives
less than an inch of water...in the form of snow, of course! This
amount of p
recipitation is similar to that of another desert, the Sahara!
Katabatic winds,
reaching 300 kilometers per hour (185 miles/hour), blow out of the
continental i
nterior and make the Antarctic coastal regions rather breezy.
Antarctica is an important part of Earth’s system. By acting as a
global heat si
nk, it helps control our climate and weather. The stability of the
Antarctic ice
sheets is of concern to those living in low-lying areas; they
contain enough wa
ter to raise global sea level almost 70 meters. Antarctica holds 70%
of Earth’s
freshwater, and 91% of Earth’s ice! Antarctica influences our global
ocean. Cold
, dense, oxygen-rich waters originates in Antarctica and replenishes
the ocean’s
supply of bottom water, helping to drive ocean circulation. The sea
surrounding
Antarctica supports marine life from tiny ice-dwelling algae to the
great whale
s. Through investigations of Antarctica we will develop a better
understanding o
f how this vast, ice-covered continent responds to environmental
change. This kn
owledge will better enable us to predict the response of all of
Earth’s systems
to future environmental changes.
Antarctica is located in the Southern Hemisphere (the half of the
globe that is
south of the equator). The continent overlies the south pole and
covers 13,824,0
00 square kilometers (5,400,000 square miles). It is the fifth
largest landmass
on the globe. 
Early Greek geographers hypothesized the existence of Antarctica
well before any
one actually saw the continent. They believed that a landmass must
exist at the
bottom of the world to balance the land in the Northern Hemisphere.
They called
the mythological land “Antarctica,” meaning “opposite the Arctic.”
No one set fo
ot on the continent until John Davis went ashore on the Antarctic
Peninsula in 1
820.
1.What impression on Antarctica can you get from the figures given
in t
he first paragraph?
2. Why does the author say Antarctica is an important part of
Earth’s system?
3. What’s the relationship between Antarctica and the oceans on the
Earth? 
4.Who was the first man to step on Antarctica? And when?
5.Who gave the name to Antarctica? What does it mean?

Passage One
New research from Statistical Research shows that the Internet is a
key part of
media consumption by young investors. 
Holders of brokerage accounts (online or offline) spend 17 percent
of their dail
y media time using the Internet, instead of television, radio,
newspapers or mag
azines. People in this age group who do not trade stocks spend 11
percent of the
ir daily media time online. 
Brokerage account holders spend an average of 48 minutes longer each
day using m
edia products, and 38 minutes of this is spent on online. 
On average, those polled between the age of 25 and 54 spent 50
percent of their
daily media time watching TV. By contrast, brokerage account holders
spent 45 pe
rcent of their daily media time watching TV. 
Statistical Research polled almost 2,500 people in this age group
about their me
dia use habits.
Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.

11. According to the Statistical Research, what do the holders of
brokerage accounts spend almost half of their daily media time on?
12. How long does a brokerage account holder usually spend in using
the I
nternet every day?
13. What can be concluded from the passage?

Passage Two
That’s how Shawn O’Neill looks back on the heart attack he
experienced shortly after his 31st birthday. 
“I thought I was in perfect health,” Shawn says. “I was never sick.
I woke up feeling good every morning.” 
Then on that fateful day in April 2002, he received a giant eye
opener. He was working in his yard in Hixson and started having pain
in his chest and arms. “I w
as pretty sure what it was, but I couldn’t believe it could be
happening to me.”
The good news is that because Shawn recognized the symptoms and went
immediately to Memorial North Park Hospital, he received the
treatment he needed and the damage to his heart muscle was minimal.
“Advances in medicine make it possible for us to stop many heart
attacks and keep people alive if they get to the hospital in time,”
says Dr. Kinsman Wright, medical director of Cardiac Services at
Memorial. “We have technology to pinpoint
blockage in the cardiac arteries and several options to open the
vessels. And lifestyle changes and medications are helping people
reduce their risk factors.”

But Dr. Wright doesn’t see any decrease in heart disease. “With
people living longer, we’re seeing different types of heart disease.
We need to keep studying and fighting it on all fronts.”
Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.

14. Do you think Shawn O’Neill is in perfect health? Why?
15. What does Dr. Kinsman Wright say about heart attacks?
16. Which can be concluded from the passage?
Passage Three
Geography as a subject has been taught at Illinois State University
since a year
after it founding in 1857. The Department came into existence in
1860 with the
creation of the Division of History and Geography, and in 1902 was
established as a separate department. By either measure, the
Geography Program at Illinois State is one two or three oldest in
the country. It is also one of the first programs established on the
Illinois State campus. Today, there are nine tenure line
faculty members and one full-time instructor.
Geology at Illinois State dates to the appearance of John Wesley
Powell, but after his departure eighty-seven years elapsed until the
Department hired its next
academic geologist, Tom Searight in 1959. The undergraduate major in
Geology was
established in 1969 with three faculty members. In 1993 a Master
program in hyd
rogeology was inaugurated, and the geology faculty grew to its
current complement of seven with one full-time instructor.
Although the early emphasis among the department faculty was on
teaching, it is
clear that many were active scholars as well, and that tradition
continues today
. Current faculty have active research agendas, and bring that
experience into the classroom.
Questions 17 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.
17. When was Geography Department established as a separate
department at
Illinois State University?
18. Who is the first academic geologist at Illinois State
University?
19. How many faculty members were there when the undergraduate major
in Geology was established at Illinois State University?
20. What’s the difference of emphasis between the early department
faculty and the current department faculty? 

Part V Writing
The Influence of Internet
With the rapid development of Internet, it has been influencing our
daily life tremendously. Internet has transformed our lives and the
way we communicate, how
we learn, how we work and spend free time. In fact, it has more or
less changed
every aspect of human society.
We can benefit a lot from Internet. Firstly, it is more convenient
than ever before. Internet has greatly shortened the distance among
human beings. E-mail is much more efficient. To do some research
work, we can search for relevant information on Internet without
leaving our home. 
Secondly, we can reduce our cost greatly. We needn’t spend lots of
time and money in printing and posting. What we have to do now is
just to send documents through Internet and it almost costs
nothing.
Although Internet has brought us many benefits, there can be no
denying that it has brought us many inconveniences, even harms as
well.
First of all, it is not safe on Internet. Maybe thousands of people
are staring
at you when you log onto Internet. Your private information, such as
your account and password, is easy to be let out.
On the other hand, with the sharply increasing amount of time spent
on Internet,
we are starting to lose ourselves, especially for those youngsters.
We are getting more and more indifferent to people around us. The
more we communicate, the
lonelier we feel.
However, Internet itself is neither right nor wrong. We can benefit
from it and
may also suffer from it. Nobody can hold back the step forward of
Internet. If we resisted it, we would certainly lag behind other
nations. What we should do is
to take full use of its advantages and try to avoid the harms it may
bring as well.
